California ranks third highest for pay for homicide detectives compared to other states and regions across the country. Homicide detectives working in California's large cities, such as Los Angeles and San Diego, make better than average wages compared to detectives who work elsewhere in the country.

Average Salary

The average salary for a homicide detective in California is $71,490, according to CareerBuilder.com. The job listing website says the average salary range for homicide detectives in California is $58,755 to $98,092.

California Regional Differences

Compensation for detectives varies across California. Homicide detectives in Los Angeles make a median salary of $85,575 per year, with an average range of $70,331 to $117,418. Similarly, those working in San Francisco average $78,820 per year with an average range of $64,779 to $108,151, according to CareerBuilder.com. Homicide detectives in San Diego have a median salary of $59,144, with an average range of $48,608 to $81,151. In the U.S., homicide detectives bring in an average of $58,751 per year, says CareerBuilder.com. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics places the average slightly higher at $62,110. Nationally, California ranks third for detective pay, according to the bureau. Only the District of Columbia ($94,620) and New Jersey ($85,930) have a higher pay average.

Employment Outlook
